Girls Weekend Away
Wine Walks
One of our famous Wine Walks, In October we hosted 4 ladies who chose the 2 night Overberg Wine Walk for their annual “Girls Weekend Away”. All four were keen animal and nature lovers who also knew their wine and how to enjoy life.
Soon after their arrival in the valley on Friday afternoon, we showcased the breathtaking Walker Bay/ Hermanus scenery from the heights of Rotary Way Drive. The easy downhill stroll to Hamilton Russell Vineyards was lined with aromatic fynbos, then olive trees, horse paddocks and finally vineyards. The tasting by Chantel their home-grown tastemaster is professional and the wine sensational. This estate first put Hermanus on the world wine map by pioneering cool-climate pinot noir & chardonnay in the valley.
A sighting of Blue Cranes added interest to our walk to neighbouring Bouchard Finlayson Estate, the most awarded vineyard in the valley. Well known for their world class Pinot Noir, the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Blanc de Mer and Hannibal the red blend, are all exceptional.
That evening we enjoyed calamari and lamb chops while entertained by the resident peacock before chatting about the weekend activities.
Saturday morning we explored a route alongside the Babylonstoren mountain range, ascending to the highest winery in the valley – Ataraxia. After sampling their stunning handcrafted wine, we descended through the vineyards into an olive farm, now walking alongside the Kleinrivier Mountainside. Beautiful, rugged limestone terrain led us to the tasting room and boutique restaurant of Spookfontein. We combined the tasting with lunch, prepared by culinary wizard Chef Charl. This popular restaurant provided the perfect environment to relax and survey the fynbos-clad mountains we had recently walked. (11 km)
Sunday called for champagne at the Framehouse of Bosman Hermanus. Wine tasting with epic views once again before strolling along a tree lined country road to Oldlands Stud Farm. No wine here but a beautiful walk through orchards and the vineyards of Sumaridge. The platters were sensational, thoroughly enjoyed with their excellent wine. The tasting room looks out over the De Bos Dam as well as the ocean and here we toasted the completion of the trail (7km)
